The Class C57 (C57形) is a type of 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in Japan from 1937 to 1947. A total of 201 Class C57 locomotives were built and designed by Hideo Shima . [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Another 14 Class C57 locomotives were built for export to Taiwan in 1942 and 1953.

C57 was said to be the most popular passenger engine model among Japanese steam locomotives. After WW2, 197 C57s were active with the exception of four (No.74, 75, 99 and 162) which were war-damaged. And two (No.90 and 106) were retired by 1964 due to accidents etc.

JNR C57-1 was part of the Yamaguchi City area Steam Locomotive tours. Was restored to operational status in 1995. Has been relocated to Kyoto for the Steam Locomotive Museum.
