The John Sprunt Hill House is a historic mansion in the Morehead Hill Historic District of Durham, North Carolina. Built in 1911–1912, it was the home of John Sprunt Hill (1869–1961) and his wife Annie Watts Hill (died 1940), daughter of George Washington Watts, co-founder of the American Tobacco Company. [2] .

Banker, lawyer, and legislator John Sprunt Hill (1869-1961) founded the Durham Loan & Trust with his father-in-law, George Washington Watts. A University of North Carolina alumnus, Hill was a major figure in Durham, N.C., business, politics, and philanthropy for almost 60 years.

John Sprunt Hill, philanthropist and banker, was born near Faison, the son of William Edward and Frances Diana Faison Hill. Among prominent relatives were his grandfather General William Lanier Hill and his great-uncle Governor Edward Bishop Dudley .

John was Principal in Charge of delivery for the $200 million Victorian Growth Areas School Project. He was Project Leader during the crucial first year of the significant State Library of Victoria refurbishment, a project whose accolades include the Melbourne Prize at the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter awards program.

Through their commitment to education, civic-mindedness, public improvement, and philanthropy, John Sprunt Hill and his wife Annie Watts Hill made enormous and indelible contributions to Durham and to the State of North Carolina.

Located in the historic district of Chapel Hill, The Carolina Inn was built in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill, 1889 alum of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and founder of the Bank of Durham. Arthur C. Nash designed the Inn and termed the building style Southern Colonial for its Georgian, Neoclassical, and European influences.
