Fearing that Post's seemingly miraculous abilities will make their own jobs unnecessary, network president E. J. Crampton (Harry Morgan) and former vice-president Francis X. Wilbanks (Joe Flynn) attempt to discover his secret to success.

As the prickly programming head Wilbanks, Flynn may remind audiences of his most famous character, that of Captain Binghamton from the popular sit-com McHale's Navy (1962-6). Flynn also made several movies with Disney, beginning with The Love Bug (1968) and reprising his role as Dean Higgins in the three Dexter Reilly films with Russell.

Young idealistic Steven Post (Kurt Russell) wants to get ahead in the TV industry but obnoxious boss Francis Wilbanks (Joe Flynn) constantly ignores him. Then Steven's loving girlfriend Jennifer (Heather North) gets a chimp (don't ask) who can predict what TV shows will be hits (!!!).
