It's actually Tolkien's symbol/logo/emblem/etc. He used it, and it's been used by the Tolkien estate ever since. It's simply his initials jumbled together. The eight dots are actually four colons, to separate the letters (so J:R:R:T:)

Besides, he has been using the JRRT monogram in some or other form since the pre-WW1 years - see that drawing on Tolkien Gateway. He used the hallmark one - minus the dots and the flame-like stroke - just as early (Eeriness, as reproduced in Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator by Wayne G.Hammond and Christina Scull, p. 43).

2018年5月11日 · after doing some looking around, the closest explanation i see is that in runic writing, the symbols would be followed by two dots, so his initials would be written as: J:R:R:T: which gives us 8 dots. i think tolkien may have simply kept those in the rearrangement.
