The Junkers Ju 87, popularly known as the " Stuka ", [b] is a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe 's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 and served the Axis in World War II from beginning to end (1939–1945).

A prominent and highly decorated Stuka ace named Hans-Ulrich Rudel was a proponent of using the Ju 87 as a tank buster. Rudel had already destroyed several Soviet tanks using the 20mm MG 151 high velocity cannons mounted in the wings of his Ju 87D-5.

2024年2月11日 · Stuka’ or ‘Sturzkampfflugzeug’ was the general German terminology for dive-bombers, but the Ju 87 with its inverted gull wing, and fixed-undercarriage was the most famous and feared of all. The Ju 87 was ugly, sturdy, accurate, but very vulnerable to enemy fighters; it’s use demanded air superiority.

The Ju 87 D-5 was based on the D-3 design and was unique in the Ju 87 series as it had wings 0.6 metres (1 foot) longer than previous variants. The two 7.92 mm MG 17 wing guns were exchanged for more powerful 20 mm MG 151/20s to better suit the aircraft's ground-attack role.

Powered by the 1,410-hp Junkers Jumo 211J-1 engine the Ju 87D was the next variant to go into production, starting in 1941. Top speed was 255 mph, range 620 miles and a service ceiling of 24,000 ft. Armament consisted of two forward firing 20mm MG 151/20 cannons and a rearward firing 7.92mm MG 51 twin barrel machine-gun, bomb load was 3,968lb.
