The original six leagues were Jirem, Ju Ud, Jost, Xilingol, Ulanqab, and Ih Ju. More were added in the subsequent centuries. Today, leagues belong to the prefecture level of the Chinese administrative hierarchy. Of the 9 leagues that existed in the late 1970s, 6 have now been reorganized into prefecture-level cities.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, pasture degradation slowed owing to human intervention for conservation, but overgrazing continues to be a serious problem throughout the Ih-Ju League. The Animal Husbandry Department of Jungar Banner estimates that the overgrazing rate was 15-25 per cent in the 1970s.

Archaeologists have recently found precious frescos after unearthing two ancient tombs in Ih Ju league, southwestern part of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The frescos, completed during the Han dynasty (BC206-AD 220), is located at Uxin banner of Ih Ju league. The tomb owners were supposed to be junior officials at that time.
