The Juneau-Douglas City Museum fosters among its diverse audiences an awareness of Juneau’s cultural heritage, values and community memory so we may draw strength and perspective from the past, inspire learning, and find purpose for the future.

Watch the award-winning, 26-minute documentary, “Juneau, City Built on Gold,” and check out the large relief map from 1967 that shows how the Mendenhall Glacier has dramatically transformed. Rotating Exhibits include solo artists in the winter, a community exhibit in the spring, and a summer exhibit that goes deeper into the area’s history.

Participants will learn about Juneau’s first inhabitants, view totem poles, hear the tales of prominent personalities from the early days, and see how the thirst for gold literally changed the landscape of downtown Juneau. This tour begins and ends at the City Museum.

Located in the heart of Juneau's historic downtown district, the City Museum is easily accessible by foot. We feature exhibits relating to local history, art and culture and are open to the public year round: Offering weekly guided historic downtown walking tours from May through September, led by volunteers who reside in Juneau.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum is located at the corner of 4th and Main, opposite the Alaska State Capitol in Juneau, Alaska. It occupies a building which was built in 1950–51 to house the Juneau Memorial Library .
