KCS 700 leads M-KCSH through Westville. This is the first SD40X ever built, and the first SD50 testbed. Notice it still has its Translite Oscillating Headlight on the nose. They had access doors on the roof, rather than the big swing-up doors visible on KCS 700, and the model was initially referred to as SD50S. The 4 KCS SD40X's, #700-703 came first and were built in September 1979. The versions for the N&W, also known as the SD50S, followed afterwards and were built in December 1980. Edited 3 time (s).

2024年5月17日 · In September 1979, EMD built four SD40X locomotives for KCS, numbered as KCS 700-703. These four KCS locomotives were essentially an SD50 carbody on an SD40-2 frame, and had 3500 horsepower with the Super Series wheel control system, and were equipped with the larger AR16 alternator.

The KCS 691 is a good catch, as it was the last SD40-2 delivered to the KCS in the summer of 1980, after the 4 SD40Xs were delivered in 1979. The following year would see the delivery of the 700-Class SD50s.

2007年12月18日 · An EMD SD40X is an 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1964 and 1965. 9 examples of this locomotive were built for test purposes to test the new 645-series prime mover. After testing, eight were sold to the Union Pacific Railroad and one example to the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad.
