The GE U36B is a four-axle 3,600 hp (2.7 MW) B-B diesel-electric locomotive produced by General Electric from 1969 to 1974. It was primarily used by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and its successors, although thirteen provided the power for the original Auto Train .

It was also the powerful B-B road-switcher any manufacturer ever offered, boasting an impressive 3,600 horsepower. From a historical perspective, GE's early 7FDL prime mover is often underappreciated for its ruggedness and pure horsepower capability.

Atlas’ U33B and U36B model is being offered in both an early and late phase. The early phase model includes flushmounted radiator screens and air intake screens on the long hood. In addition, there is a built-out area on the top of the front and rear pilots.

Originally built for the Auto Train Corporation in 1974, they were never delivered, being sold instead to Conrail in 1976. They saw service in all capacities on Conrail and all four were retired in 1991 and traded in to GE.

In 1969 GE succeeded in bringing the 7FDL with 16 cylinders to an output of 3,600 hp. The first model was the U36B with only four axles, which was intended for fast freight trains. The Seaboard Coast Line bought 108 of the 125 U36Bs.

For a time, the locomotive sported a smiley face and bowtie in conjunction with auto-train's sponsorship of the Walt Disney World Railroad. A U36B built by GE 5/1974, builder's number 39844. From this unit on, the locomotives had rounded headlight housings and Chessie-style rock pilots on the front.

2004年9月2日 · These were plugged into U36B’s for hauling phosphate trains in Florida. The MATE’s are probably the only factory-built slugs. The road slugs on CSX seem to be used mostly in mine-run and transfer duty where the speeds are low and the loads are heavy.
