Every Plasma Style that provides its own background or icons uses Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files (ending in .svg) or compressed SVG files (ending in .svgz). While any vector graphics software can be used to manipulate SVG files, we will be using Inkscape here.

The SVG Viewer KPart allows KParts-using software to display SVG files in a rendered view. This button only works with Discover and other AppStream application stores. You can also use your distribution’s package manager.

The KSvg framework introduces a series of apis to render SVG based graphics both with a QPainter-based api and and accelerated QtQuick component set. The Qt Quick framework and set of KDE Frameworks provide the underpinning for KSvg framework.

KSvg provides both C++ classes and QtQuick components to render svgs based on image packs. Compared to plain QSvg, it caches the rendered images on disk with KImageCache, and can re-color properly crafted svg shapes that include internal stylesheets.

KDE icons are SVG files. We recommend the use of Inkscape or another free, open-source vector graphics editor for maximum compatibility. How to edit an existing icon. Many KDE icons come in multiple versions that are optimized for various sizes, so once you're done editing one version, make sure to edit the others accordingly.
