The kob (Kobus kob) is an antelope found across Central Africa and parts of West Africa and East Africa. Together with the closely related reedbucks, waterbucks, lechwe, Nile lechwe, and puku, it forms the Reduncinae tribe. [2]

Armed with heavily ridged lyre-shaped horns 40–69 cm (16–27 inches) long, males stand out in a crowd of hornless females; they also have darker coats that enhance the white throat patch, underparts, eye rings, and insides of ears. Sexual dimorphism reaches its extreme in the white-eared kob, with males the colour of ebony.

The White-eared Kob is a subspecies of the Kobus kob, commonly known as the Kob. Characterized by its notable white ear markings and vibrant, crisp fur, it represents a unique part of Africa’s biodiversity.

White-eared kob, Kobuskobleucotis, Lichtenstein & Peters, 1853, is known to occur between the Gambela-Boma landscape in Ethiopia and South Sudan (Marjan 2014, Kingdon 2015, Schapira et al. 2016). They live in herds and are generally found near water, in plains, woodlands, swamps and flood plains (Kingdon 2015).

Their ears are proportionate to their head size and are often seen twitching or moving, enabling them to pick up sounds and locate sources of noise. The Kob also possesses a unique feature known as a “suborbital gland,” located just below its eyes.
