Kelso is a ghost town and defunct railroad depot in the Mojave National Preserve in San Bernardino County, California, USA. It was named after railroad worker John H. Kelso, whose name was placed into a hat along with two other workers to decide the name of the town.

Hidden gem literally in the middle of no where. This is an old Union Pacific depot built in 1924 that was almost demolished. Luckily, it was saved and fully restored by the National Park Service (one of the few examples of the government actually doing something good).

Built in 1924 by the Union Pacific Railroad, the Kelso Depot has been transformed into Mojave National Preserve’s principal information center, with museum exhibits, historically furnished rooms, a theater, and bookstore.

Kelso is an ex-mining town located in eastern California. As many as 2,000 people lived in Kelso during it’s mining boom during the 1940s. The main building is the historic railroad depot that is now a visitor center / art gallery / museum for the Mojave National Reserve.

In the remote Mojave National Preserve, pretty much the only modern structure is the Kelso Depot. Located right in the middle of the park, it is a haven of information on the park itself and provides modern bathrooms for its many visitors.
