Professor Kerry Kelts passed away on February 8, 2001 at the age of 54 after a long and courageous battle with Hodgkins Disease. His contributions to the study of lakes, in ancient rocks and in modern sediments, were enormous. Kerry influenced the direction of limno- geology and geolimnology around the world.

Primary, diagenetic, and detrital carbonates are common in the sediments of large lakes. Their location, mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotopic composition may provide specific information on a lake’s chemical and environmental history.

Kerry Kelts' dream for a new field of geology, entitled Limnogeology, sprang from his fervent belief that lakes could provide continental paleorecords of equal, if not greater, sensitivity and precision than marine paleorecords.
