The Ki-44 Shoki ("Demon") Type 2 Single Seat Fighters were designed for speed and climbing, targeting specifically high-flying bombers. The first flight took place in Aug 1940, and they entered service on an experimental basis in Dec 1941 when nine Ki-44s were assigned to the 47th Independent Air Company in Saigon, Indochina (Vietnam).

The Nakajima Ki-44 'Shoki' (eng:Demon) was a single-engine fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II. The type first flew in August 1940 and entered service in 1942.

The Ki-44 was a complete departure from the standard manueverability emphasis placed on Japanese aircraft design. Though disliked by pilots, and deadly to less experienced pilots, the Demon was moderately successful in the interception role.

My favorate Shoki is the Ki 44-IIc variant with four 20-mm Ho-3 cannon. These preceeded the famous rapid fire 20-mm Ho-5 used in the Ki-44-III and subsequently on all IJA fighters. The Ho-3 was slow but had far more velocity and a much heavier shell. This would complement it's bomber interceptor role more than dog fighting other fighters.
