1 天前 · Hawaiian lava flows generally advance slowly downslope, and during this eruption flows have been confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater and the southwest side of Kaluapele, Kīlauea's summit caldera.

Halemaʻumaʻu crater has a long history of lava lake-style eruptive events. It is currently home to a lava lake that appeared on September 29, 2021. Radiating out from the summit, Kīlauea has two rift zones stretching to the east and southwest. These rift zones host most eruptions that occur outside of the summit.

Eruptions are prominent in Polynesian legends; written documentation since 1820 records frequent summit and flank lava flow eruptions interspersed with periods of long-term lava lake activity at Halemaumau crater in the summit caldera until 1924.

Within the massive Halemaʻumaʻu crater, it can be hard to get a sense of scale. Though it may have looked small, in November 2020 the lake was an astounding 160 feet (49 m) deep, nearly the height of a ten story building. It was approximately 430 feet (131 m) wide by 885 feet (270 m) long, with a volume of nearly 125 million gallons.

The lava has remained inside the volcano’s summit caldera and within the park, and no residential areas have been threatened. Kilauea, located on the southeastern part of the Big Island, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Kilauea’s latest eruption began Dec. 23, and has been pausing and resuming since.
