The 2021 KNP Complex Fire was a large wildfire in Sequoia National Park and the Sequoia National Forest in Central California's Tulare County. After lightning ignited the Paradise and Colony fires in the southern Sierra Nevada on September 9, the twin blazes combined into the Complex and burned a total of 88,307 acres (35,737 hectares).

In 2021, the 88,307-acre KNP Complex Fire burned portions of 16 giant sequoia groves, a total of 4,374 acres (1,770 hectares). Here we compare and contrast the fire's effects on two of our largest and well-known groves.

The majority of the total acreage of the KNP Complex has burned in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. This is a full-suppression fire. The KNP Complex does not pose any threats to life or property at this time. In light of significant precipitation events across the Sierra Nevada, the fire was declared 100% contained on December 16, 2021.

This fire evacuated many communities, closed public lands, and ultimately killed approximately 3-5% of the world’s population of mature giant sequoias. Total containment means that the fire’s perimeter is considered secure, and no further growth is expected.
