2020年5月14日 · From 1 September 2020, the South Korea government will implement mandatory SOx Emission Control Areas (SECAs) requiring the use of 0.1% sulphur fuel by ships in specified port areas. The South Korea government has also released a voluntary speed reduction program in the same ports.

From September 1st 2020, all vessels berthing or at anchorage in the Korean ECAs must burn fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.10 %. Ships must switch to compliant fuel within 1 hour after anchoring or mooring and continue using it until 1 hour before departing. The Korean ECAs cover Korea’s five major port areas. These port areas are:

Decrease the ship-driven emission via designating Emission Control Area (ECA), initiating Vessel Speed Reduction Program (VSR) and expanding the use of eco-friendly vessels.

South Korea has introduced new environmental laws that will bring in voluntary speed limits for ships and emission control areas. The Special Act on Air Quality Improvement in Port and Other Areas allows the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOF) to introduce steps to reduce air pollution from shipping.
