The station originally debuted in 1966 as KPLU-FM, owned by Parkland-based Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). It became a community licensee in 2016 after a proposed sale to the University of Washington, owner of fellow NPR station KUOW-FM in Seattle, resulted in opposition from station listeners.

KNKX is funded by a loyal community of listeners who value the station’s vital services. In August of 2016, after an unprecedented public effort to save the station, the station became independent, changing its name from KPLU to KNKX. KNKX stands for "Connects," which reflects our commitment to inspire, educate and entertain across the region.
