Porsche offered Kremer Racing a choice of two versions of the Type 912 engine. The first was the 4.5-litre unit of the flat-12 that had powered the 917 early in its career and the second was the larger, 5-litre engine fitted to the later developments.

The car, dubbed the Porsche 917 K81, was heralded as one of the favorites along with the works Porsche 936s and the Rondeau M379s. With its “K” this time referring to Kremer and not to Kurzheck (short tail), the 917 was as much an attraction for racing enthusiasts when it arrived at Le Mans as it was a curiosity for the press of the time.

The 917 pictured here is the last Porsche-sanctioned 917 built, constructed by the Kremer team that won Le Mans in 1979. A rule change for the 1981 season led to Kremer building a custom aluminum frame for the 917, with Porsche providing two Type 912 engines, a Type 920 gearbox, and technical support.

Following the two 1981 outings at Le Mans and Brands Hatch, the unique Porsche 917 K/81 was retired to the Kremer Racing showroom. It was retained by the Kremer Brothers through to 1986 when it was tested by a German magazine and compared to a brand new 962C.
