KTCA (channel 2) began broadcasting as the first non-commercial public television station in the state on September 16, 1955, from a shabby, WWII wooden barracks-type structure on the University of Minnesota Agricultural Campus.

KTCA, broadcasting on VHF channel 2, signed on the air on September 16, 1957. The station was founded by Twin City Area Educational Television, Inc. (renamed Twin Cities Public Television, Inc. in 1999), the region being the derivation of its call letters.

In the late 1990’s KTCA (Channel 2) found themselves in predicament brought on by changing technology. As broadcast television was evolving from analog to digital signals, along with that came a major change to how channels were organized and offered to the audience.

Twin Cities PBS also serves the Mankato market (via K26CS-D [relaying KTCA] and K29IE-D [relaying KTCI] in nearby St. James through the local municipal-operated Cooperative TV [CTV] network of translators), as that area does not have a PBS member station of its own.
