Kuang Research Lab | Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
One of our lab's primary interests is developing and regenerating the skeletal muscles. Specifically, we investigate the molecular signaling that regulates the stem cells responsible for forming muscles during development and repairing muscles after injury.
Shihuan Kuang | Duke Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
We are interested in understanding the molecular regulation of stem cell fate determination and how deregulation of stem cell homeostasis leads to degenerative and chronic diseases; and exploring strategies to target stem cells to treat diseases such as muscular dystrophy, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

Shihuan Kuang | Scholars@Duke profile: Research
Recent single cell RNA-seq studies in the lab has led to the discovery of a subset of satellite cells with immune cell properties (PMID: 32248062; News Release). Ongoing studies aim to dissect the origin and function of these immunomyoblasts (i.e. immune gene-expressing myoblasts).
