In Hawaiian religion, the Kumulipo is the creation chant, first recorded in the 18th century. [1] It also includes a genealogy of the members of Hawaiian royalty and was created in honor of Kalaninuiamamao and passed down orally to his daughter Alapaiwahine.

Kumulipo is a mele koʻihonua, a chant that recites birth order. What’s so special about Kumulipo is that it starts with the very first mating and birth. It is a record of the beginnings of the Hawaiian world.

The Kumulipo is what connects kānaka to the ‘āina; it confirms that the land we live on and the creatures that surround us are our ‘ohana and that we should treat them as such. Animation has been chosen as the medium to best illustrate what has only been put into words.

More than just a creation story, Kumulipo is the genealogy of the Hawaiian people. From the first atoms of matter formed in darkness to the most complex life forms of land, air, and sea, this 2,000 line chant recounts the birth of all living things in Hawaiʻi.
