The Louisville and Nashville Railroad (reporting mark LN), commonly called the L&N, was a Class I railroad that operated freight and passenger services in the southeast United States. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1850, the road grew into one of the great success stories of American business.

The Louisville & Nashville Railroad Historical Society was organized in 1982 for the purpose of collecting, organizing, preserving, and sharing information and material relating to the L&N, its predecessors and its successors. At its zenith, the L&N was a 6,000-mile railroad system that served 13 states.

The Louisville & Nashville Railroad was born March 5, 1850, when it was granted a charter by the Commonwealth of Kentucky “...to build a railroad between Louisville, Kentucky, and the Tennessee state line in the direction of Nashville."

2024年10月12日 · The L&N's first segment officially opened on August 25, 1855 and work proceeded quickly to push rails southward towards Tennessee. After four years of additional labor the railroad's charter was completed when it opened to Nashville on October 27, 1859.

2017年10月8日 · The Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad achieved national recognition as one of the most profitable and influential railroads in the southern market from the second half of the nineteenth to well into the twentieth century.

L&N acquired its first tracks in Mississippi on October 5, 1881, when it bought the New Orleans, Mobile & Texas Railroad running from Mobile, AL to New Orleans, LA. L&N merged with Seaboard Coast Line to form Seaboard System in 1982. A northbound L&N passenger train stops at the Biloxi depot in 1912. L&N depot in Pascagoula in 1914.

This study examines how the city of Louisville contributed to the development of the L & N Railroad and traces the troubled relationship between the L & N's Board of Directors and Louisville's major city government councils.

In its formative years after being chartered in 1850, the L&N focused on building its line south from Louisville to Nashville, eventually reaching Birmingham and New Orleans. By 1902, the railroad created a second parallel rail line from Cincinnati to Atlanta GA.
