The RAF Tristar is a retired air-to-air refuelling tanker and transport aircraft, formerly in service with the Royal Air Force (RAF). All airframes were retro-converted civilian Lockheed L-1011-500 TriStar airliners, previously operated by British Airways and Pan American World Airways, and entered service with the RAF in 1984.

The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar (pronounced "El-ten-eleven") [1] is an American medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner built by the Lockheed Corporation. It was the third wide-body airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10.

The L-1011 Tristar served the RAF for over three decades. It was extensively deployed in various conflicts and humanitarian missions, proving its flexibility and reliability in demanding conditions. Notably, during the Gulf War, it supported combat operations by refueling Tornado and Jaguar aircraft, ensuring mission success.

Tempus Applied Solutions (TAS) announced on Aug. 14, 2017 that it has acquired six ex-Royal Air Force (RAF) Lockheed L-1011 Tristar tankers and three of them will be used for air-to-air refueling (AAR) operations.

The first jet for AHM was the Lockheed L-1011 (TriStar), s/n 193B-1066. This is an original TWA ship bearing the tail number “N31019” while flying for Trans World Airlines. After sale by TWA, she briefly carried a foreign registration.

Lockheed developed the shortened fuselage L-1011 TriStar 500 as a long range, smaller capacity derivative of the TriStar 200. Launched in August 1976, the key changes incorporated in the 500 over the standard L-1011s are the 4.11m (13ft 6in) shorter fuselage, greater takeoff weights, increased fuel capacity and more powerful RB211-524 engines.

The 3-engine Tristar is a transport and tank aircraft in service with the British Air Force (Royal Air Force, RAF). The Tristar can transport 266 passengers or 160 passengers and 43 tons of cargo.
