After many changes to design and calibre the eventual result was the SA80 or the L85 Individual Weapon and the L86 Light Support Weapon (LSW). The eventual weapons were essentially ArmaLite AR-18s in a bullpup configuration. The LSW was to replace the ageing 7.62x51mm L4 Bren light machine guns and the L7 GPMG at section level.
