It concerns 26 LCT Mark 5s. Sometime in late 1943, the planners of Overlord decided they needed more close in firepower. They may have been influenced by the British, especially General Montgomery. As a result the U.S. Navy Gunfire Support Group was formed. The group consisted of LCGs, LCRs, and LCT(A)s.

The result, in early 1942, was the LCT Mark 5, a 117-foot craft with a beam of 32 feet that could accommodate five 30-ton or four 40-ton tanks or 150 tons of cargo. 2015年5月4日 · The LCT(5) design, of which 470 were built, was 114 feet in length overall and 133 tons in light displacement: the later LCT(6) design, of which 965 were built, was 120 feet in length overall and 143 tons in light displacement.

Laid down September 29, 1942 as Landing Craft Tank (Mark 5). Delivered October 15, 1942 in three sections for trans-shipping to Mare Island Navy Yard on Mare Island for final assembly. Launched November 4, 1942 as LCT(5)-181 for service in the U.S. Navy (USN) and shipped overseas to the South Pacific.
