
LMS Jubilee Class - Wikipedia
The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Jubilee Class is a class of steam locomotive designed for main line passenger work. 191 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1936. They were built concurrently with the similar looking LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 .

6P5F & 7P 45552 – 45742 4-6-0 LMS Stanier Jubilee
When the Jubilee class was first introduced in 1934 it was simplified as 5XP. The following year the LMS hierarchy selected the class to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary.

Testing showed the Patriots to be superior to the Claughtons and as a result 40 more "rebuilds" were ordered (although they were effectively new locomotives), followed by a final batch of 10, which the LMS finally recognised as new locomotives. The class acquired the unofficial name "Baby Scots", which didn't really meet with official approval.

The 5XP “Jubilee” class locomotive was a further development of the “Patriot” class locomotive by William Stanier, going into production at the same time as the somewhat similar class 5P5F “Black Five” design.

They became the standard LMS mid range express passenger locomotive with 191 being built, far more than any other LMS express locomotive type built. The Jubilees saw use on the cross country routes and the Midland line out of St.Pancras. Thankfully four survive in preservation.

Class 5XP Jubilee - rebuilt (Locobase 3760) The original 5XP design described in Locobase 3071 proved short of steam and Stanier rebuilt two of them in 1942 to improve the breed. The boiler was shortened to 13.25 ft between tube sheets and the grate enlarged to 31 sq ft; Belpaire firebox heating surface increased from 162.4 sq ft to 181 sq ft.
