The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Class 8F is a class of steam locomotives designed for hauling heavy freight. 852 were built between 1935 and 1946 (not all to LMS order), as a freight version of William Stanier's successful Black Five, and the class saw extensive service overseas during and after the Second World War.

Following Stanier’s new designs of express and mixed traffic engines for the LMS he turned his attention to the need for a heavy standard freight engine. The 8F class was introduced in 1935 and the design was a success straight off the drawing board proving itself far superior to the 0-8-0s which had been inherited from the LYR and LNWR.

With the 8F set to make an appearance in Spirit of Steam, we'll be taking a look at the history of this Class of locomotive in a series of articles here on Dovetail Live. The first looks at its widespread use prior to withdrawal in the 1960s.

After reviewing the working life of the class, we will then explore the preservation of the 15 locomotives which survive today.

2022年5月24日 · William Stanier's Black Five locomotives have become some of the most famed in the preservation era - but its freight-bound equivalent, the 8F, receives less fanfare at times, despite being used far beyond most other steam locomotives.

The class operated all over the LMS railway system and after the railways Nationalisation in 1948, the locomotives operated over most of the railways throughout Britain. Stanier 8Fs were no strangers to the Great Central Railway (GCR), having worked many heavy freight trains on the London Extension from Nottingham to London in the latter years ...

The standard heavy freight locomotive design for the LMS & also built in large numbers for the War Department during World War 2. 852 locomotives were built but not all where used in service in Britain. All locomotives are available for all versions of Trainz from TS2009 to T:ANE.

2023年9月16日 · The former War Department and Turkish State Railways 8F 2-8-0 No. 45160 (LMS No. 8274) has since left the Nottingham Heritage Railway (Great Central Railway Nottingham) and has been thought to be relocated to a private site at Malvern in Worcestshire, where last reports say that its owner maybe looking into overhauling it??
