This section of the LNER Encyclopedia describes all of the locomotive classes to serve with the LNER. The LNER would often denote major modifications with a slash. E.g. B16/2 is a modified B16. Occasionally such modifications would be so substantial that a completely new class number would be given (eg. an A3 is a modified A1).

Both the NBR and the LNER chose to only fit superheated boilers to the D29s after the original saturated boilers had reached the end of their lives. The NBR prepared drawings for D29s fitted with Robinson superheaters in December 1922, and the first was fitted in 1925. The last D29 became superheated in 1936.

The Hill J18 & J19 (GER Classes E72 & T77) 0-6-0 Locomotives
Hill's Great Eastern Railway (GER) Class E72 (LNER J18) was a development of the still saturated J17 goods locomotive. The J18 added superheating and piston valves to the design. The new superheated boiler was fitted with an 18 element Schmidt superheater, and continued to be interchangeable with the D14 Claud locomotives.

The LNER 'J' 0-6-0 Locomotives: J1 - J20. The 0-6-0 wheel arrangement was by far the most numerous used by the LNER. It was used mainly for locomotives intended for freight, branch, and shunting work. If any single type epitomises the British steam locomotive from the mid-19th Century, it is the inside-cylinder 0-6-0 tender loco.
