The LNER's Express Pacific designs were probably the most famous of the LNER locomotives. And of these Pacifics, the A4 is probably the most famous of all. Its distinctive streamlined casing has come to be a symbol of 1930s luxury and fascination with speed. Even today, it is an A4 which holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive.

The LNER Class A4 is a class of streamlined 4-6-2 steam locomotives designed by Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1935. Their streamlined design gave them high-speed capability as well as making them instantly recognisable, and one of the class, 4468 Mallard, holds the record as the world's fastest steam locomotive.

No. 4497 is a Class A Spirit Tank Wagon for the carriage of highly inflammable liquids with a flash point below 150F, such as petrol and aviation spirit. Being a privately-owned wagon it was registered with the LNER as No.27287 in 1930. The rail tanker fleet of Shell and BP remained combined for many years.

2012年10月29日 · Immediately prior to 1948, the livery of 4497 was garter blue with LNER on the tender, and numbered cabside simply '31'. As 4497, between May 1942 and August 1947, it was black. Prior to that it was always garter blue, with full valances. It was built in October 1937.

The LNER class A4 locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for use on the top-link expresses on the East Coast Main Line from London Kings Cross.

All the names, numbers and photos of class A4 LNER streamlined "Pacifics" (4-6-2 wheel arrangement) as designed by H.N.Gresley. The numbers are those carried by the locomotives in the BR period. Six of the original class have preserved - 60007, 08, 09, 10, 19, 22.
