The North Eastern Railway Class S3, classified B16 by the LNER, was a class of 4-6-0 steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic work. It was designed by Vincent Raven and introduced in 1920. The earlier members of this class were fitted with Westinghouse Brakes - all of this equipment was removed during the 1930s.

Vincent Raven's Class S3 (LNER B16) was a culmination of the North Eastern Railway's (NER) development of the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement started by Wilson Worsdell's Class S (LNER B13). When they first appeared in 1919, the B16s were described as "fast goods" locomotives, but this was later changed to the more appropriate "mixed traffic" description.

The LNER would often denote major modifications with a slash. E.g. B16/2 is a modified B16. Occasionally such modifications would be so substantial that a completely new class number would be given (eg. an A3 is a modified A1). Modifications of the same class typically share the same webpage. Thompson and Peppercorn both reused class numbers.

LNER 4-6-0 Locomotives. Originally introduced to Britain in 1894 for freight haulage, 4-6-0 locomotives ("Ten-Wheelers" in American railroad jargon) became the predominant type for express and mixed traffic duties. By 1948 4-6-0s in Britain were outnumbered only by 0-6-0s and 0-6-0Ts, and British Railways built more 4-6-0s than any other type.

2021年7月13日 · I have been researching the 3 cylinder Stephenson link inside valve gear for the S3. Sadly, the NRM drawings register has no details that I could find, other than GAs and Pipe and Rod. There are references to common parts with the T3 (LNER Q7) that was being constructed at the same time at Darlington Works.
