The M. Stirling Class D24 (H&BR Class J) 4-4-0 Locomotives. Although the Hull & Barnsley Railway (H&BR) was built primarily to carry coal, it also attempted to generate passenger traffic. In October 1905, this resulted in the Midland Railway granting the H&BR running powers between Cudworth and the Midland's Sheffield station.

The LNER 4-4-0 'American' Locomotives D1-D24. The 4-4-0 was introduced to Britain in the 1850s with outside cylinders. The inside cylinder form became the archetypical British express locomotive in the late 19th Century. When superseded by Atlantics or 4-6-0s the type was versatile enough to continue on secondary passenger duties in many areas.

Although the 4-4-0 configuration was very popular for tender locomotives, it was an unpopular choice for tank engines. The LNER only had two 4-4-0T classes, both inherited from the North British Railway (NBR).

The GNR Classes D2 and D3 were two classes of 51 4-4-0 steam locomotives designed by Henry Ivatt for the Great Northern Railway (GNR). They were the first 4-4-0s to be introduced by the GNR, and Ivatt's first original design for the railway as well. [1] The first member, No. 400, emerged from Doncaster Works in December 1896.
