The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was a reconnaissance and raiding unit of the British Army during the Second World War. Originally called the Long Range Patrol (LRP), the unit was founded in Egypt in June 1940 by Major Ralph Alger Bagnold, acting under the direction of General Archibald Wavell.

Over the years there have been a fair number of unusual LRDG artifacts that have shown up in personal collections and in auctions around the world.

The LRDG was an organization with an independent nature and the vehicle names and camouflage schemes reflected this. The Patrol commanders were given free reign to name and paint their vehicles. They used whatever paint was available to hand applied in the patrols own camouflage ideas.

At this point in time; it has been universally accepted, that "Gunner Claude Olaf Grimsey" NZ #551 was responsible for the design of the famous LRDG Cap Badge of the Scorpion in the Wheel. As the story goes; while sleeping he was stung three times by a scorpion that "died".
