2022年2月9日 · With the inception of the LRDG, Bagnold used his contacts in Cairo to procure two small biplanes from local businessmen. The planes were essentially commercially produced WACOs (Produced by the Weaver Aircraft Company of Ohio). The planes were export versions of WACO cabin biplanes.

The LRDG area of operations between 1940 and 1943, known as the Western Desert, stretched about 930 miles (1,500 km) south from the Mediterranean to the Tibesti and the Jebel Uweinat mountains, and about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) from the Nile valley in the east to the mountains of Tunisia and Algeria in the west. [53]

In April of 1941 the LRDG HQ moved into Kufra Oasis as their advance base. Their Waco aircraft had been purchased in late March but were not ready until May, as the LRDG had to find a private contractor to make them air-worthy.

The aircraft were 'acquired' by the LRDG's second-in-command, Major G L Prendergast (a pilot himself) to solve the problem of supplying widely scattered outposts. The Wacos shortened the trip from Kufra to the Nile from ten days to one. We have over 1.7 million object records online, and we are adding to this all the time.

2011年10月5日 · The WACOs were sturdy aircraft with the typical short take off and landing associated with biplanes, which made them ideally suited for the clandestine work of the LRDG.

The Waco Standard Cabin series is a range of American single-engine 4–5 seat fabric covered cabin biplanes produced by the Waco Aircraft Company beginning in 1931 with the QDC and continuing until 1942 when production ended for the VKS-7F. [1]

Below is an early 1940 LRDG Chevy found in the Libyan Desert in 1984. This only known surviving LRDG WWII vehicle is now resting in the Imperial War museum in London.
