LS9. The LS9 was introduced in 2009 for the ZR1 Corvette. At the time, it was the most powerful engine ever produced by GM. It featured a 2.3L roots blower and made 638 hp. The heads, block, and internals were all upgraded for strength. It also used a dry sump oiling system. The LS9 was available until 2013. It was replaced in 2014 by the LT4. LSA

These engines are truck versions of the high performance LS3. The stock engines all make over 400 hp. The engine blocks have the same casting number as the LS3 and L99. They share a 4.065 in. bore, Variable Valve Timing (VVT) and rectangle port heads. The blocks also have the internal oil passages for AFM.

The aluminum blocks are lightweight, compared to similar iron block engines. Just like all the Gen. 4 engines, the blocks have internal oil passages for AFM, even if it wasn't used. With upgraded internals, they can handle around 850 hp. What's the difference? The easiest way to tell the difference is to check the 8th digit of the VIN code.
