A lower (uterine) segment caesarean section (LSCS) is the most commonly used type of caesarean section. [1] Most commonly, a baby is delivered by making a transverse incision in the lower uterine segment, above the attachment of the urinary bladder to the uterus.

It is important to correctly hold the edges of the incision because strong bleeding often occurs from both edges of the wound. The fetal nasal cavity and mouth should be suctioned with a suction bulb to remove amniotic fluid and induce crying. The umbilical cord is cut, and the infant is given to the midwife. Fig. 6.

Lower segment incision – will be used wherever possible. This is a horizontal cut through the abdomen and a horizontal cut through the lower part of the uterus, sometimes known as a ‘bikini line’ incision. These cuts heal better, are less visible and are less likely to cause problems in future pregnancies.
