3.1 Ties. Ties shall be arranged in a way that every corner and alternate longitudinal bar shall have lateral support provided by the corner of link having an included angle of not more than 135 degrees. Transverse ties shall not be farther than 150 mm clear on either side from laterally supported longitudinal bars.

Lateral ties are used to hold the position of the reinforcement in a column without disturbing the concrete space. Both are the same and only differ from their placement. If it is placed in a column it is known as lateral ties.

The codes require that all longitudinal bars in tied columns be enclosed by lateral ties of a minimum size, with the size based on the diameter of the longitudinal bars. For bars 10mm or smaller, the minimum lateral tie size is 3mm; for bars 11-18mm, the minimum is 4mm.
