You can see up close and personal how the lava flowed directly over a road in the national park. This was from lava flows in 1972. As the National Park Service says, with a visit to the Alanui Kahiko stop: Walk to lava flows from Mauna Ulu that poured over the 800 foot (250 meters) high cliff and swept across Chain of Craters Road.

4 天之前 · One of the largest networks of lava tubes runs beneath the road, including the Kazumura Cave system that extends over 40 miles. These caves formed when the lava’s outer layer cooled while hot lava kept flowing inside, leaving empty tunnels up to 60 feet high. The caves stay at 68°F year-round and are home to unique animals.

Visitors making their way down Highway 132 today will drive through cross-sections of this riverbed, with its massive walls of cracked, jet-black rock that appear nearly vertical. Several pull-offs along the road allow for closer observations of the strange, curious and sometimes eerie-looking rock formations.
