A close examination of the black rock pieces indicate that they have small white specks that are plagioclase phenocrysts (crystals of the mineral plagioclase). The angular nature of the black rock pieces within the rock indicate that the original lava flow was violently blasted into millions of pieces of rock and ash by a volcanic eruption.

This rock was formed from the cooling of hot magma that was extruded onto the earth’s surface as lava. The rock is fine-grained since the magma cooled quickly. A close examination of the surface of the rock indicates the presence of white-colored crystals called phenocrysts of the mineral plagioclase (a type of feldspar mineral).
