Father Frédéric-Vincent Lebbe (Chinese name: 雷鳴遠) (19 August 1877 — 24 June 1940) was a Roman Catholic missionary to China whose advocacy led Pope Pius XI to appoint the first native Chinese bishops.

2025年1月9日 · When he passed away in Chongqing in 1940, Vincent Lebbe fulfilled the promise he had made to himself some fifty years earlier. He dedicated his entire adulthood to the people and to the Catholic Church of China, becoming Chinese in dress, language, and loyalty and embracing their struggles, joys, and pains.

Muhammad Cassim Siddi Lebbe (11 June 1838 – 5 February 1898), who was also known by the name Mukammatu Kacim Cittilevvai, was a prominent figure in British Ceylon, modern-day Sri Lanka. He made significant contributions across various fields as a lawyer, educationist, scholar, and philosopher.

In 1895 he entered the Vincentian seminary of St. Lazare in Paris and, six years later was assigned to the vicariate apostolic of Peking (Beijing). From the beginning, Lebbe was convinced that missioners should become Chinese in dress, language, attitude, and even loyalty in order to win Chinese people to Christ.

2025年2月28日 · Vincent Lebbe is remembered in the annals of the Chinese Catholic Church as a controversial figure who was not afraid to follow his convictions, even when he was strongly opposed. Born in Belgium in 1872, Lebbe studied for the priesthood and at the age of 26 he went to China as a Vincentian missionary.

One could argue that the history of the Société des Auxiliaires des Missions (SAM), truly began when a schoolboy named Frédéric Lebbe (1877-1940) decided to become a missionary in China after reading about Jean-Gabriel Perboyre who died a martyr at Wuchang 武昌 in 1840.

2022年6月24日 · When the Communists took over China, they captured Fr. Frederic Lebbe on March 9, 1940. The Communists treated him as a spy and brainwashed him and physically mistreated him for six weeks. This treatment led to Fr. Frederic becoming very ill, and he died in Chungking of exhaustion on June 24, 1940.
