The lemon (Citrus × limon) is a species of small evergreen tree in the Citrus genus of the flowering plant family Rutaceae. The lemon is a hybrid of the citron and the bitter orange. Its origins are uncertain, but some evidence suggests lemons originated during the 1st millennium BC in what is now northeastern India.

The lime and lemon horticultural group is genetically highly polymorphic, with diploid, triploid and tetraploid varieties, maternal phylogeny involving four types of cytoplasm out of the six encountered in the Citrus genus, and the nuclear genome contribution of the four basic Citrus taxa (C. medica, C. maxima, C. micrantha and C. reticulata).
