Lexington is within the Shenandoah Valley about 57 miles (92 km) east of the West Virginia border and is about 50 miles (80 km) north of Roanoke, Virginia. First settled in 1778, Lexington is best known as the home of the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Lexington was named in 1778.

Lexington, city, seat (1777) of Rockbridge county (though administratively independent of it), west-central Virginia, U.S. It lies in the Shenandoah Valley, on the Maury River, 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Lynchburg. The area was inhabited by the Cherokee and Monacan peoples before the 1730s, when European settlement began.

Lexington is located in the center of Rockbridge County in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. It is home to Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University, which contribute a high level of cultural activity in the community.
