The silver medalist from 1928, Lien Gisolf of the Netherlands, was back and was the world record holder, having jumped 1.62 (5-3¾) in Amsterdam in June 1932. Also considered were Americans Jean Shiley and Babe Didrikson, who had tied at the US Olympic Trials with 1.60 (5-3).

Carolina Anna (Lien) Gisolf (Fort de Kock – Nederlands-Indië, 13 juli 1910 – Amstelveen, 30 mei 1993) was een Nederlandse atlete, die in de jaren twintig en dertig van de 20e eeuw als hoogspringster furore maakte. Ze werd wereldrecordhoudster op dit onderdeel en nam tweemaal deel aan de Olympische Spelen, met een zilveren medaille als resultaat.

Van de zestig Nederlandse atleten was Lien Gisolf de enige die een podiumplek veroverde. Ze behaalde een zilveren medaille op het onderdeel hoogspringen, met een sprong van 1,56 meter. Gisolf was hiermee de eerste atlete van Nederland die een Olympische medaille won.
