The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is a labor union that represents nearly 750,000 workers and retirees in the electrical industry around the world. The union also represents some workers in the computer, telecommunications, broadcasting, and other fields related to electrical work.

Linemen energize the country by installing and maintaining the distribution and transmission lines that control electricity from power plants to homes and businesses. Linemen work in conditions that are at times extreme, like getting the power back up after a major storm.

Outside construction lineman primarily install and maintain the overhead distribution and transmission lines that move electrical power from power plants to local consumers such as businesses, homes and factories. They also install and maintain poles and towers and underground systems.

linemen formed an organization called the United Order of Linemen. Th e group was headquartered in Denver, Colorado, and was able to organize a considerable number of line-men in the Midwest and western United States. However, it was not until a few years later that our Brotherhood would be formed. 1890 THE BEGINNINGS OF BROTHERHOOD

The National Association of Journeymen Linemen was created to promote the profession of Journeymen Linemen. For decades the profession of a Journeyman Lineman has been one of brotherhood, sacrifice and dedication.

Ten delegates, representing 286 members, met to form what was then called the National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Those ten members are credited as being the founders of the IBEW. One of the delegates of that first convention was TJ Finnell from Chicago, Illinois.
