2021年10月9日 · There are five or six species of Liriope, all native to East Asia. All are clump forming evergreen or semi-evergreen herbaceous perennial plants with narrow grass-like leaf blades. A patch of liriope plants looks like well behaved ornamental grass.

Liriope, sometimes called lilyturf, is among our best evergreen ground covers. It multiplies rapidly and requires very little care. It grows well throughout South Carolina. There are two major species grown in our area: big blue lilyturf (Liriope muscari) and creeping lilyturf (L. spicata).

Liriope plants come in two main types: Liriope muscari and Liriope spicata. Liriope muscari, commonly known as big blue lilyturf, features broad, arching leaves and dense clumps of purple or white flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall.

Several varieties of Liriope species, a grass-like groundcover very similar in use and appearance to its close cousins the mondo grasses (Ophiopogon sp.), were introduced into the southeastern USA from Japan and other Asian areas about 150 years ago.

Lilyturf is a genus of broadleaf evergreen, clump-forming, perennials in the Asparagaceae or asparagus family. The name liriope is derived from new Latin and is a nymph in Roman mythology. Though it may resemble an ornamental grass it is not a true grass.
