Lodi is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in the Central Valley of California, at the northern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, within portions of Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties, east of San Francisco Bay.

The Lodi American Viticultural Area (AVA) was officially recognized in February of 1986. Perfectly situated 90 miles east of the San Francisco Bay, the Lodi AVA is one of the largest in California at approximately 550,000 acres, more than 100,000 of which are planted to premium winegrapes.

The Lodi AVA (American Viticultural Area) has seven sub-AVAs, of which, the most important (historically) is Mokelumne River. Mokelumne is an area that surrounds the city of Lodi and is home to the oldest vineyards.

The Lodi AVA is one of the largest in California. The AVA includes 551,000 acres of which 103,000 acres are currently planted with wine grapes.

Lodi is one of the largest and most productive AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) in California. Lodi grows around 20% of California’s winegrapes — more than Napa and Sonoma combined! Lodi’s climate is comparable to places like Paso Robles or Healdsburg.

Because it falls within a watershed immediately east of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, draining directly into San Francisco Bay, the entire Lodi AVA is defined by a “Delta Breeze” climate, giving the appellation a Mediterranean climate comparable to most of the coastal wine regions of California.
