The Loess Plateau is a plateau in north-central China formed of loess, a clastic silt-like sediment formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust. It is located southeast of the Gobi Desert and is surrounded by the Yellow River. It includes parts of the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi and Shanxi. [4]

Also referred to as the Huangtu Plateau, the plateau encompasses the following provinces : Gansu, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, and the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.

This map shows the location of China's Loess Plateau in relationship to the Mu Us Desert, the Gobi Desert and the city of Beijing.

The Loess Plateau is generally demarcated by the Great Wall to the north and the Qin Mountains to the south. It extends between the North China Plain of eastern China and the deserts of the west. The region includes land in parts of Shanxi , Henan , Shaanxi , and Gansu provinces and the Ningxia autonomous region.
