Centuries later, a Patryn known as Xar escaped the Labyrinth, and started returning to the Labyrinth to rescue others. He learned how to access the other worlds, using the eponymous portal called the Death Gate, and dreamed of freeing all his people from the Labyrinth and conquering the other worlds.

The player takes the role of Haplo and starts in the Nexus with Lord Xar. Lord Xar tasks Haplo to visit the four worlds, Arianus, Pryan, Abarrach and Chelestra and retrieve the seal pieces of these worlds. Xar plans to undo the Sundering with the Reformation, the act of recreating the Earth again and he needs the seal pieces to do so.

Anti-Villain: Xar is, by his own admission, a ruthless and often cruel man, but he's also deeply invested in the survival and wellbeing of his people, risking his life on a nearly daily basis on the chance he might be able to free Patryns from the Labyrinth.

The main character of the series is Haplo, a Patryn Villain Protagonist who, as of the first book, is sent out through Death's Gate to investigate the other worlds on behalf of his master, Lord Xar. His orders are a classic bait-and-switch: if Haplo causes as much chaos and death as possible, Xar can come in as the Big Damn Heroes later.

It is the third book in The Death Gate Cycle series and was released in 1991. The novel explores the realm of Abarrach and the history of the Sartan through the unlikely partnership of Haplo, a Patryn agent sent by Lord Xar to evaluate Abarrach, and Alfred, a Sartan who lost all the others of his race with whom he once lived.

2015年1月6日 · Mortally wounded, Haplo finds himself at the mercy of Lord Xar, facing a fate worse than death. Xar plans to resurrect Haplo – bringing him back to life as one of the tormented living dead – to force him to reveal the location of the legendary Seventh Gate.

2014年8月5日 · The first Patryn to ever make it through the final gate and into the Nexus is called Lord Xar. Since his attaining his freedom, he has returned when he could into the Labyrinth in order to rescue more of his people.

He has been sent by his lord, Xar, to explore the world, because no Patryns have visited the worlds since the Sundering. Xar rescued Haplo from the Labyrinth, where he and all the other Patryn have struggled against countless monsters.
