The Lotus 81 was a Formula One racing car built by Colin Chapman's Lotus team for the 1980 Formula One season. Unlike many of forebears the 81 was not a terribly innovative or competitive car, coming as it did at a time when Chapman's interest in his racing activities was waning.

The Lotus 81 will not go down in history as one of Lotus’s most successful cars.

The Lotus 81, designed for the 1980 Formula 1 season by Martin Ogilvie and Colin Chapman, was a typical ground-effect car with a classic design. After the failure of the Lotus 80, it was preferred to use a simpler concept without innovative solutions, relying on a proven technology.

Lotus 1980-1989: Type 81 to Type 100 Appearing in the dramatic blue, red and silver colours of the Formula One team, a turbocharged version of the 2.2-litre 907 engine is fitted to the new aptly named Turbo Esprit, which prompted another Bond movie appearance.

The Type 81 made a dramatic public debut in December of 1979 as it was lowered from the ceiling of the Paradis Latin Nightclub in Paris. This was for good reason as the ground effect aerodynamics relied on the shape of the floor of the car.

In 1980 Team Lotus began construction of a Lotus type 81, as raced by Mario Andretti, Elio De Angelis and Nigel Mansell. In 2020 Classic Team Lotus completed the task. The Lotus type 81 chassis number 5 was intended to be the sixth car of that type. The monocoque was constructed, the chassis plate affixed and components manufactured.

Combined with the ground-effects chassis, the Lotus 81 could still achieve some impressive performance, but it would not be enough to challenge the dominance of Williams and their Ford Cosworth. The engine's exhaust pipes fed out of the side of the Cosworth engine into the practically barren sidepods.

2019年4月12日 · The Lotus 81 was built and revealed to the public in 1979 when it was hung from the ceiling in the Paradis night club in Paris. It first raced in 1980 and was the fourth generation Lotus ground effect F1 car, it had sliding skirts and was seen as an improvement on its’ predecessor the Lotus 80.

The first of only five Lotus 81 ever built and competed in 11 World Championship Grand Prix between 1980 and 1981, carrying the famous Team Essex Lotus Racing livery and was driven by Mario Andretti, Elio De Angelis and Nigel Mansell.
