The M79 grenade launcher is a single-shot, shoulder-fired, break-action grenade launcher that fires a 40×46mm grenade, which uses what the US Army calls the High-Low Propulsion System to keep recoil forces low, and first appeared during the Vietnam War.

The folding ladder sight is graduated from 75 to 375 meters in 25-meter increments and is quite accurate in experienced hands.

The M79 was a large-bore, single-barrel, single-shot weapon that was breech loaded and fired from the shoulder. It launched a 40mm by 46mm grenade in a round that resembled a huge bullet. The close-support infantry weapon reportedly was nicknamed Thumper, Blooper, Thump Gun, or Bloop Tube by some soldiers due to its distinctive report.

2023年12月27日 · On October 19, 1960, the U.S. Army announced the testing and evaluation of a new 40mm grenade launcher designated as the “XM79.” The weapon was designed to fire a high explosive (HE) shell at a muzzle velocity of 250 feet per second, at a range out to 400m (410 yards), when launched with a barrel elevation of approximately 35 degrees.

2022年2月24日 · The M79 grenade launcher was known by many names, including the “Thumper-Gun” and the “Bloop Tube” – Australians even called it the “Wombat Gun.” Resembling a shotgun, it was used by US troops serving in Vietnam during the 1960s. While it had its positives, its drawbacks eventually led to it being replaced by the M203.
